We'd rather be frank than oversell: seeing a black rhino in Tanzania is rare. The
Ngorongoro Crater shelters one of the few black rhino groups visitors can reach, but a single visit still carries no promise of a sighting. The animals here form a small, closely protected population, and you won't pass one casually the way you might lions or elephants.
Because rangers monitor the crater's rhinos closely, looking for them takes patience and sensible expectations, not a box-ticking attitude. If a rhino is at the top of your hopes, tell us directly, and we'll set up your itinerary, and your expectations, to match.
There's also a dedicated black rhino sanctuary program at
Mkomazi National Park, although the public can get in less easily than at Ngorongoro.
If a black rhino sighting is a priority for your trip,
contact us, and we'll be straight with you about what's realistic.
