The Serengeti and the Maasai Mara belong to one continuous ecosystem, yet they deliver different experiences, and the right pick depends on your priorities. The Serengeti is much larger and, overall, less crowded; the Maasai Mara is considerably smaller, with heavier vehicle traffic around its famous river crossings in particular. Timing is the other big difference. The migration passes through the Maasai Mara for only part of the year, whereas the Serengeti supports strong resident wildlife populations year-round no matter where the migrating herds are at the moment. That makes a Serengeti trip the safer bet if your dates can't flex around migration timing. If you can manage it, combine both with a few days in each, spaced a week or two apart. You'll catch the migration at two quite different stages of its annual route instead of choosing one place and missing the other altogether. Take a look at our guide to combining Kenya and Tanzania, or contact us and we'll help you decide which one fits your trip.
