Most safari planning centers on daytime game drives, yet a whole different cast of wildlife comes out after dark, and a handful of places in Tanzania let you see it properly. Night game drives are allowed in select areas, among them Ngorongoro's highlands and some private concessions, and they turn up species you'd rarely meet on an ordinary day drive.
Genets, aardvarks, porcupines and spotted hyenas are all seen far more often at night than by day, when many of them rest or stay hidden. The rhythm is different, too: slower and quieter, with a spotlight standing in for daylight.
One thing deserves advance planning. Not every park allows night drives, so you can't simply decide to add one once you're already in Tanzania. If a night drive appeals, it has to be built into your itinerary from the beginning.
