Visiting Tanzania in May: Climate, Animals and Visitor Numbers
What a May safari in Tanzania is really like
The long rains wind down in May, and in most years the weather eases visibly as the weeks pass. The migration keeps moving, drifting toward the western corridor after fresh grazing. That leaves the wildlife more scattered than during the packed calving months, but the scenery more than makes up for it.
May is among the most visually striking times to be in the Serengeti. After the rains the plains are lush and green, which gives photographers a rich, saturated backdrop that the dry months simply can't match. Good-value pricing typically lasts through most of May as well, until the June high season starts pushing rates upward again.
If you don't need guaranteed dry weather and would like to catch the tail end of the quieter, better-value shoulder season before the dry-season crowds show up, May is an underrated choice.
