Visiting Tanzania in March: Climate, Animals and Visitor Numbers

What a March safari in Tanzania is really like

In March the Serengeti's year turns a corner. The long rains usually set in, and the migration reacts by heading north and west, leaving behind the Ndutu area where it spent the previous two months. On the ground it's a month of transition, and that is precisely what makes it appealing to the right sort of traveler. Rates fall noticeably from the January-February peak, because March sits outside the two windows most travelers build their plans around. Landscape and wildlife photographers should give the trade-off serious thought: stormy skies and shifting light over the plains yield some of the most dramatic pictures of the whole year, even if a few roads turn muddy after a heavy downpour. March rewards flexibility more than a rigid checklist. If you can live with the occasional rain-affected game drive in return for lower rates and quieter camps, it offers real value that the peak months can't match.
