Visiting Tanzania in February: Climate, Animals and Visitor Numbers

What a February safari in Tanzania is really like

February is when calving season hits its peak. Newborn wildebeest crowd the southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains, sometimes thousands arriving in a single day, and the predator action that follows is among the most dependable wildlife viewing anywhere along the migration's yearly route. The weather is easy in February too: dry, warm and steady across the Northern Circuit, with long spells of clear sky that allow full, uninterrupted game-drive days. It's an especially good month for cheetahs. The open, short-grass plains typical of this part of the Serengeti in February suit the way cheetahs hunt, which relies on long sightlines more than on cover. With calving season at its height, February faces the same booking pressure as January. Camps near Ndutu and the southern plains fill early, so don't leave planning to the last minute if you have your heart set on a particular property. Our calving season guide goes into more detail on what to expect, or browse our safari itineraries to begin planning.
