Ruaha National Park: What Visitors Should Know
Ruaha National Park: What Visitors Should Know
A Complete Visitor Guide
Two things define Ruaha, the biggest national park in Tanzania: large herds of elephants and one of the strongest lion populations remaining in the country. Everything about it is built on a grand scale.
Logistics come first. The park sits far from the usual routes, so you'll typically fly in briefly instead of driving from Arusha, and that affects how you fold it into a bigger itinerary. Treat Ruaha as a destination you plan for deliberately, not something to tack on at the last minute. We therefore recommend combining it with Nyerere (Selous) as a full southern circuit, rather than going on its own.
The reward for all that planning is real isolation. Ruaha gets just a small share of the visitors the Northern Circuit parks see, and its lions and elephants show up reliably, free of the vehicle queues that can thin out the magic of a Serengeti game drive in high season.
