If you've already done a classic Zanzibar beach holiday, or you simply want something quieter, Pemba Island deserves serious consideration. Its beaches are noticeably calmer and its diving is some of the best in the whole region, without the more developed tourist infrastructure that has grown up around parts of Zanzibar.
Getting there is simple. A short flight or ferry connects Pemba with Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam, so it's a realistic add-on and not a major detour from a standard safari-and-beach itinerary.
Pemba suits a particular kind of traveler best: divers, and anyone deliberately looking for a quieter alternative to Zanzibar's busier, more developed coast. If that sounds like you, it's a worthwhile extension and not just "more of the same" beach time.
