Best known for its black rhino sanctuary conservation work and its wild dog sightings, Mkomazi is a dry, semi-arid park. Both are increasingly difficult to find reliably anywhere in East Africa.
Even the scenery differs from the Northern Circuit. Mkomazi borders Kenya's Tsavo ecosystem and has a distinct semi-desert feel, very unlike the greener plains of the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. Instead of a standalone safari destination, think of it as part of a Kilimanjaro-area itinerary: where it sits makes it a natural extra for travelers who are already in the region to climb.
Wild dogs or rhino conservation work high on your list? Then fold Mkomazi into a Kilimanjaro-focused trip rather than planning a separate journey.
