A handful of direct questions will tell you a lot about how an operator really runs its safaris. Start by asking how many vehicles they usually put at one sighting. Fewer vehicles generally means a better, less crowded experience, and an honest operator will answer straight instead of dodging.
A specialist operator focused on a single ecosystem, as we are, often has stronger local relationships and deeper accumulated knowledge than a generalist agency booking trips across the whole continent. That focus tends to show in the quality of the guiding and in the small details of an itinerary.
You should also ask for references or reviews from your own travel month, since conditions and experiences vary dramatically by season. A glowing review of a July migration trip says little about what to expect in April.
